My final day at Worlds End had me revisit the Canyon Vista, explore the Rock Garden, hang out at Sones Pond with an old snapping turtle, and walk a stretch of the Loyalsock Trail. Previously I’d been to the covered bridge at Forksville, backpacked for two days on the Link and Loyalsock Trails, hiked up to the Worlds End Vista, and been to High Knob.

But despite four days at the park, I’d not even begun to exhaust the possibilities. There were many other trails and attractions I could have visited, either in the park itself or the surrounding Loyalsock State Forest. But my time was drawing short, as I’d decided to treat myself to indoor lodging for a night as part of traveling west toward my final destination for the trip, Bradford. So I decided to take on a simple, relatively easy trail, for my final hike.

Double Run Nature Trail is little more than a mile long, but it packs a lot into the distance.

The stream features cascades, and the wet weather meant the waterfalls were impressive. The hiking was easier than other trails I’d done, with a flat packed dirt surface for much of the hike. I used poles, but I probably didn’t need them. Despite my hiking on a Friday afternoon I was alone on the trail. And being alone with nature, and participating in it, helped overcome some of my sadness at how my backpacking trip turned out.

My hike was a mile, and I went back to the Visitor’s Center.
